Hebron Historic Survey

Wanick Rd
This survey was carried out between 1974 and 1978 by volunteers at the request of the State Division for Historic Preservation. The goal was to understand the historic resources of the town so they could be protected. Volunteers interviewed property owners when they could, took photographs of the buildings over 50 years old, gave written descriptions and a small map for each one. The survey includes bridges, cemeteries, houses, barn and other outbuildings. The work is described in the PDF entitled "Front Material". The work was to have been available to residents upon request with originals plus photos on file with the county. HPS scanned the photocopy of the survey into PDF files.

The sites are numbered 1-386 (though some survey sheets are missing in this copy, these are indicated in the document in order). Because the copy we were able to obtain is a photocopy of a photocopy, some of the pages are dark and somewhat difficult to make out. Some property descriptions have extensive historic information, others are spare. There is an index (Front Material), however the index associates the number of the site with a then-owner's name (alphabetical). Addresses, unfortunately, are those recorded at the time which was prior to the 911 addressing and so not current. HPS plans to update addresses. There may be errors in the information volunteers collected.

Hebron Preservation Society was created as a result of this survey, when people realized there was no formal means of recording and honoring Hebron's past. The Hebron Historic Survey Committee, which led this effort, included Sally Brillon (chair), Joyce Day Brown, Colleen Coon, Harold and Drucille Craig, Gertrude Getty, Al Green, Barbara Reardon, Carolyn Webber, and Jack & Irene Wetherby.
